Located on the southern coast of California in northern San Diego County, Encinitas is home to more than 60,000 people. San Diego is only twenty-five miles to the south of the city, and Los Angeles is only ninety-five miles to the north. Encinitas was incorporated in 1986 out of five separate areas—historic Encinitas, new Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain. It is a unique city in that its largest industry is growing poinsettia flowers.

Education

There are four separate school districts within Encinitas: Cardiff Elementary School District, Encinitas Union School District, Mira Costa College District, and San Dieguito Union High School District. The main public high school is La Costa Canyon High School, and there are three private high schools and one continuation high school. Encinitas has two private and two public middle schools. There are thirteen elementary schools, three of them private. There are multiple institutions of higher education within reasonable distance of Encinitas. CSU San Marcos is less than half an hour away, Biola University is less than twenty minutes away, and San Diego's universities are about half hour drive away. Encinitas also provides a community college within the city limits, MiraCosta College. 

Recreation

Beaches are abundant in Encinitas and a central part of local culture, and surfing is a particularly popular activity. There is plenty for residents to do in all parts of the city. New Encinitas has a golf course and a shopping center, while Leucadia is marked by its art galleries, stores and restaurants. La Paloma Theater has long offered entertainment to Encinitas residents. There are some interesting natural sites as well—Encinitas is home to Cardiff State Park and San Elijo Lagoon, as well as the Quail Botanical Gardens, which displays various tropical rainforest plants and various species of bamboo.
